WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Dental implant imitates root of the tooth, and usually is in the shape of a screw. It is made of highly refined titan and its alloy materials. This material is completely bioinert, which means that organism does not recognize it as foreign body, and because of that there is no possibility that organism will reject it, nor will be any allergic reactions.
INDICATIONS AND PREREQUISITES FOR INSTALLATION OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
Indications for installation of implants are, as we mentioned it, lack of one or more teeth, or total toothlessness. Also, patients with shaking and falling prosthesis represent candidates for ‘mini’ implants which will hold prosthesis.
Basic prerequisite for successful therapy is a sufficient amount of bone on place provided for implantation.
If, on the basis of radiographic analysis, becomes obvious that dimensions of bone are not adequate for installation of implant (inadequate removal technique, natural reabsorption of bone over time), then the technique of upgrading (augmentation) of bone is done, with modern biomaterials, and after that follows implantation.
Unfortunately, therapy with implantations has contraindications in case of some chronic diseases and conditions. Contraindications can be absolute and relative i.e. those with whom implantation is possible with certain measures.
GENERAL MEDICAL CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR INSTALLATION OF IMPLANTS
- smoking (more than 10 cigarettes per day);
- drugs that influence metabolism of bones (bisphosphonate);
- untreated or insufficiently controlled diabetes (diabetes mellitus);
- reduced immunity due to disease or drugs;
- recent myocardial infarction;
- general secondary osteoporosis;
- ongoing radiotherapy.
LOCAL CONTRAINDICATION
- bad oral hygiene;
- presence of parallel functions (bruxism, clenching of the jaw);
- insufficient volume of edentulous ridge (bone);
- unfavourable inter-jaw relation;
- acute state caused by bacteria, virus or by fungal infection.
Detailed information about methods of treatments, materials and system of implantation you will get after free medical checkup and radiographic analysis, which is related to each individual patient.
PREPARATION OF PATIENT
- instruction by expert about proper maintenance of oral hygiene, which is very important for the successful therapy and prevention of infection of bone around implant (periimplantitis);
- smokers – reduce number of cigarettes to under 10 per day!;
- if you have some chronic disease you will have consultation with proper doctor towards as best as possible preparation for surgery.
POSTIMPLANTATION COURSE
Implant- root of tooth, is set up, screwed on place where tooth is missing, in painless intervention that lasts about 20min
After implantation, post-surgery course is the same as with minor oral-surgery intervention. You will get advice about treatment with medicaments and about behaviour after intervention with written report.
PROSTHETIC PHASE
Some time must pass before steady binding of implants and the surrounding bone (osseointegration). How much time will pass depends on many factors, but mainly it is about 2 months and in that time we do not strain implant with prosthetic upgrade.
There are implants that thanks to their designs and prosperously surface can be strained immediately after installation, so that the patient gets temporary prosthetic upgrade in the same visit. This protocol is especially convenient for patients who do not have much free time for treatment (dental tourism, business people).
After radiographic verification that implant is successively integrated around bone, comes the ‘revelation’ phase of implant and installation of cap that forms gingiva around future upgrade. This phase lasts up to 15 days, after which imprint is taken, and then final prosthetic upgrade is made .
